Peel and chop the potatoes and carrots into evenly sized pieces.
Place them in a pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook until both are fork-tender.
Drain well and return to the pot. Add butter and milk, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and mix well before serving
