- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 large egg beaten
- 1 tsp salt

- For topping

- 1 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)

How to Make It
Activate the Yeast
In a large mixing bowl, combine the active dry yeast and warm water (about 110°F). Stir gently, then add the oil and sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
Whisk in the beaten egg until well combined.

Mix the Dough:
Gradually add the salt and flour, mixing continuously. Add the flour 1/2 cup at a time until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
Knead the Dough
If you’re using a stand mixer with a dough hook, knead on medium speed for 3-5 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Alternatively, knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Divide the Dough
Skip the rising step and immediately divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball by tucking the edges under and rolling gently. (I used 2 of the 8 portions to make 4 smaller buns for my little one—they were the perfect size!)
Rest the Dough
Place the dough balls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced slightly apart. Cover loosely with a clean kitchen towel and let them rest for 10 minutes.
Prepare for Baking
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash generously over the top of each dough ball. Get creative with the toppings! In addition to sesame seeds, you can try everything bagel seasoning, poppy seeds, or even a sprinkle of coarse salt for extra flavor—or simply leave them plain for a classic look.

Bake the Buns
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 8-12 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cool and Serve
Remove the buns from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature with your favorite burgers or sandwiches. Enjoy!
