  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup white onion, finely diced
  • 2 cups carrots, julienne
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 tsp dried red chili flakes (optional)

Equipment I Used

How to Make It

Prepare the Beef

In a large bowl, toss the sliced top sirloin steak with 1/2 cup of cornstarch, ensuring each piece is evenly coated. This will help create a crispy texture when cooked. Set aside.

Make the Sauce

In a separate mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 2 tbsp sesame oil, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 cup lightly packed brown sugar, and 2 tbsp sesame seeds. Whisk everything together until well combined, then set the sauce aside.

Cook the Beef

Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and add a bit of oil. Once hot, place the cornstarch-coated steak slices in a single layer in the pan. Cook each side for about 2-3 minutes, until golden brown. Remove the cooked beef from the pan and set aside.

Sauté the Vegetables

In the same frying pan, add a bit more oil if needed, then add the julienne carrots and finely diced onions. Sauté for about 2 minutes, until the onions become translucent and the carrots are slightly softened.

Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and 1/4 tsp of red chili flakes (if using) to the pan. Sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes, allowing the aromatics to release their flavors.

Incorporate the Sauce

Pour the prepared sauce into the pan with the vegetables. Lower the heat to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken slightly, stirring occasionally.

Combine Beef with Sauce and Vegetables

Return the cooked beef to the pan, stirring to coat each piece in the sauce. Let it cook for a few more minutes to warm the beef through and allow the flavors to meld together.
