What You’ll Need

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces Lo mein noodles or spaghetti noodles
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 12 ounces flank steak
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 medium carrot shredded
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp pepper

Equipment I Used

How to Make It

Cook the Noodles and Broccoli

In a large pot of boiling water, cook 8 ounces of lo mein or spaghetti noodles according to the package instructions. During the last 5 minutes of cooking, add 3 cups of broccoli florets to the pot. Drain both the noodles and broccoli, and set aside. Note: I opted out of the noodles to make this a low-carb option.

Prepare the Steak

While the noodles are cooking, cut 12 ounces of flank steak into ¼-inch strips against the grain. This helps ensure tenderness.

Cook the Steak

Heat 1 tbsp of olive oil in a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak strips and cook until the steak is browned and no longer pink in the center, about 3-4 minutes. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.

Sauté Garlic and Carrots

In the same skillet, add 3 minced garlic cloves and 1 shredded carrot. Cook for about 1 minute until the garlic is fragrant and the carrots begin to soften. (I also added some celery for extra crunch and flavor)

Make the Sauce

In a small bowl, whisk together ¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce, 2 tbsp hoisin sauce, 2 tsp sesame oil, ¼ tsp ground ginger, ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes, and ¼ tsp black pepper until well combined.
